Our alcoholic son has moved back in with us after his wife kicked him out and we’ve had enough

DEAR DEIDRE: OUR son has moved back in with us after his wife threw him out because of his drinking.

My husband and I are in our sixties and our son is 43. He is an alcoholic. He keeps trying to give up and once managed it for three years, but then relapses.

I understand why his wife couldn’t cope any more and at least our son has found himself a job, but I wonder how long he will hold it down.

He comes in late very drunk, crashes round the place often breaking cups and things. We’re at our wits’ end.

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s a sad fact that you can’t give up for him but has he had expert support when he’s tried to stop drinking?

He may need medical help with withdrawal and also therapy to work out what pain he is trying to block out with the alcohol.

My e-leaflet Dealing With A Problem Drinker explains a range of sources of support you can access.
