CALIBRATION GASES – THE GROWTH OF ITS USAGE IN THE INDUSTRY SECTOR TODAY

Not many people know the function of a calibration gas cylinder, as it seems to be a very technical concept. It might be foreign to many, but it is important to understand what it is, as many industries today have started to make purchases of the calibration gas cylinder for various equipment and gas calibration purposes. If an individual has some good knowledge on this matter, it could certainly be very beneficial for them to get a job in the industry by making a very good first impression on the person hiring them.

To explain in brief, a calibration gas is a mixture of gases that acts as a reference often used as a criterion for comparison for calibration of various equipment and other analytical instruments.

Some of the apparatuses that use a calibration gas cylinder for reference are a gas detector or a gas analyzer used in industries that produce, say, fertilizers and even chemical industries where there might be some harmful gases being produced as a byproduct. These detectors and analyzers are remarkably important to safeguard the on-floor operators and representatives around equipment. Every gas used for calibration must have its nature defined as either a zero gas or even a span gas so that the people handling the gas can clearly distinguish amongst them and other gas cylinders.

Importance of Calibration gases in every industry domain:

  • The gases used for calibration are essential for the smooth and efficient operation of the calibrated equipment.
  • The use of these gases becomes crucial when human lives are involved as their lives are being put constantly at risk with each step not taken to prevent an odourless, poisonous gas leak that has caused many fatalities.
  •  The use of calibration gases is essential for keeping all equipment and gas detectors functioning at optimal levels and having a routine maintenance check done annually or semi-annually to be on the safer side.
  • When used to calibrate a piece of equipment, these gases will ensure a very accurate reading, which is why they are the preferred source of calibration compared to other means, especially when dealing with a potentially important instrument such as a gas analyzer or a detector.

Gas calibration standards of learning about:

  • Primary reference gas mixture (PRGM): The PRGM is the highest known standard for the gases to be used commercially as they are often produced in direct comparison to the PSM (Primary Standard Material), and hence the uncertainties are often as low as possible.
  • Secondary reference gas mixture (SRGM): These are not as accurate and as high-quality reference gases in terms of the standard, as they are prepared using the gravimetric technique by keeping the PRGM as the reference point and hence the analytical uncertainties and values are present on the certificate. The SRGM is often used extensively in industries and for calibration because it can balance out the low uncertainties and be extremely cost-efficient.

Many incredible suppliers manufacture and supply the calibration gases to various manufacturing segments or any other industry with their detachable equipment for a quick and efficient check of apparatus calibration. But finding and proceeding with a purchase from a supplier who is efficient and transparent with their work every step of the way and consideration for the environment make the most ideal supplier. After all, every industry’s moral obligation is to safeguard the environment by minimizing pollution as much as possible.
