Finding time to take care of your health can feel impossible when you are juggling a hectic work schedule; trivial things like doctor’s appointments tend to get pushed further down the list in favour of those ever-looming deadlines. But working to the point of exhaustion puts you at higher risk of stress and serious health problems, so here are 6 tips to help you stay on top of your game.

Get a Better Water Bottle

Staying hydrated has been shown to improve energy levels and brain function, as well as being a common treatment for migraines. A bottle with time markers will not only jog your memory to help you keep track of your intake, but it will also reward you with a little dopamine boost every time you hit your target.

Invest In Yourself

You might not think it is important, but a decent quality office chair can seriously improve your quality of life. Neck and spinal problems can be alleviated with the right supports, while carpal tunnel syndrome may be eased with the use of a laptop stand or wrist splints. 

Don’t Get Too Comfortable

That said; if you are working at a desk, try to take just a few minutes every half hour or so to move. Studies show that sitting for extended periods can increase health risks significantly, but the good news is that even a quick trip to the kitchen for a glass of water can be enough movement to keep your body in full working order. If you have time, spend 5 minutes stretching between tasks to get the blood flowing again. You might even decide to use a standing desk for part of the day.

Make a meal plan that lets you prepare a week’s worth of meals ahead of time – this will save you precious time, without forcing you to compromise on your eating choices due to time constraints. In the same vein, keep a stash of healthy and filling snacks on hand for those days and weeks when you truly don’t have time to plan ahead. 

Less Is More

Did you know that studies have found the average employee to only be productive for around 12-15 hours per 40-hour workweek? As crazy as it may sound, making a schedule that gives yourself less time to get work done might make you more productive. Aim to include time for exercising and socializing in your schedule, as these activities both help reduce stress and improve health. Don’t forget to give yourself time to rest, too.

Have A Lie In

Sleep is so important for avoiding fatigue, mitigating stress and anxiety, and recovering from the demands of daily life. At least 6, or ideally 8, hours a day will help you to feel rested and alert while you are on the go. Sleep also helps boost your immune system, your memory, and even your heart.

So, there you have it! It can seem daunting to take time out of work for healthcare when your to-do list reaches the floor, but a few minutes spent on caring for yourself each day will save you a lifetime in the long run.
